Statement from President Phil Hanlon on Incident at Latinx Ivy League Conference at Brown University

Body

Nov. 16, 2015

The safety and well-being of Dartmouth students is my highest priority. As such, I was deeply disturbed to hear reports of an incident at Brown University over the weekend, reports that described racial profiling and excessive use of force against a Dartmouth student by public safety officers at that institution. Last night I met with the leaders of the Dartmouth delegation attending the conference as well as other leaders of the Latinx community, together with Provost Carolyn Dever, Dean of the College Rebecca Biron, Vice Provost Inge-Lise Ameer, and Assistant Dean and Advisor to Latino Students Rodrigo Ramirez.

I have also spoken to Brown President Christina Paxson to express my concern. She told me that the officer involved has been put on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident. Based on our conversation, I am confident that she and her team will conduct a fair, thorough, and expeditious investigation into the incident and take necessary steps.
