The number of students applying to Dartmouth has held steady this year. The Admissions Office announced today it has received 20,550 applications for the Class of 2020. This year’s figure is within 1 percent of the 20,507 applications received for the Class of 2019.

The announcement follows a 3.6 percent increase this year in early decision applicants—students who designated Dartmouth as their first choice. Out of 1,927 early decision applicants, the College accepted 494 students through its traditional selection process, and 10 additional students through its partnership with the Posse Veterans Program, which supports U.S. military veterans in getting a college education.
“What I have seen thus far of this year’s applicant pool is very strong. I’m delighted to see prospective students from a wide range of demographic backgrounds with impressive academic and extracurricular accomplishments,” says Paul Sunde, interim dean of Admissions and Financial Aid.
“This is a wonderful moment for students to join the Dartmouth community,” adds Provost Carolyn Dever, noting the College’s recent investments in interdisciplinary faculty clusters and the creation of a new residential structure of house communities for all students. “Our academic enterprise is growing and we are transforming the way students live and learn on campus. I look forward to welcoming the Class of 2020 in the fall.”
The Admissions staff has begun the process of reviewing regular decision applications and will communicate decisions to candidates on March 31.
Once students are admitted, the College will hold a variety of events, both on campus and around the country, designed to help prospective students learn more about the Dartmouth experience.

On campus, the Admissions Office will host Dimensions of Dartmouth, two- and three-day on-campus programs for admitted students, scheduled for April 12-13 and April 17-19.
“Planning for this year’s programming is already underway,” Sunde says. “We look forward to collaborating with faculty, students, and staff across campus to welcome the 2020s to the Dartmouth community.”
In addition, Sunde says, the College is planning a number of off-campus events, hosted in conjunction with alumni volunteers around the country and the world. These aim to help the newest members of the Dartmouth community connect with alumni and students closer to home. Last year, alumni hosted 35 such events, and Sunde expects a similar number this year.
“These events are a great way to make connections across generations of Dartmouth students,” Sunde says. He encourages any alumni interested in hosting such a program to be in touch with the Office of Alumni Relations.
