“There is no surprise that sometimes when you try to do something good you have these negative effects,” says Thayer School Assistant Professor of Engineering Vikrant Vaze in a Los Angeles Times story about a study he conducted with colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that found that an airline passenger rights law may increase passenger delays rather than reduce them as airlines are more likely to cancel delayed flights to avoid fines.

The good news, the story says, is that the law can be modified to reduce passenger delays.
