This month, four adventuresome high school scientists from across the country will join 18 Chilean students for a 10-day educational trip led by the Dartmouth College Institute of Arctic Studies and the Chilean government, with funding from the National Science Foundation. The travelers, whose plans are reported in The Washington Post, will spend five days in Punta Arenas, Chile, touring museums and learning about local culture. Then they will head to King George Island in Antarctica.
Lauren Culler, a Dartmouth environmental studies lecturer, is coordinating the journey for the American participants.
“We might be hiking to a glacier and observing vegetation at the margins of the glacier, doing studies of snow and ice, making observations of wildlife at some of the beaches on the island,” Culler told the newspaper. “It’s very interdisciplinary, all different kinds of science.”
One of the traveling high school students, Andrea Mares, plans to study environmental engineering and, according to The Post, has applied to Dartmouth.
