Cross country skier Sophie Caldwell ’12 won her first World Cup event yesterday in the 1.2-kilometer sprint in the Tour de Ski, in Oberstdorf, Germany, USA Today reports.

“It was the first time a U.S. skier has won a classic sprint and left Caldwell in third position in the Tour de Ski sprint standings,” the story says.

“I tend to be a bit of a stronger skate sprinter, but it has been one of my goals to improve my classic sprinting and I think the course today really suited my strengths,” Caldwell says in the story. “I had amazing skis that kicked right up all the hills.”

The win makes Caldwell the third American woman to win a World Cup. At Dartmouth, Caldwell was a five-time All-American and was named by Ski Racing Magazine as the 2012 Collegiate Nordic Skier of the Year.
