The search for Dartmouth’s next dean of libraries and librarian of the College has begun, Provost Carolyn Dever announced today.

Jeffrey Horrell, the 18th librarian of the College, will retire at the end of June after 11 years of service to a system that has grown and changed under his direction.
“The libraries are critical partners in the work of all our faculty, students, and staff,” says Dever. “I know there are many, myself included, who will miss Jeff Horrell’s leadership and collegiality. It will not be easy to find his successor, but we will honor his legacy by seeking excellence at every stage of this search.”

The next librarian of the College will oversee nine libraries containing close to 3.4 million volumes and supervise a staff of about 170. The executive search firm Storbeck/Pimental & Associates is working with the College on the search. Dever anticipates filling the position by July.
Dennis Washburn, the Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor in Asian Studies and chair of comparative literature, will chair the search committee. The other committee members are Susan Ackerman, the Preston H. Kelsey Professor in Religion; Thomas Cormen, a professor of computer science; Anne Kelley, a graduate student in chemistry; Karen MacPhee, library supervisor at Kresge Physical Sciences Library; Rick Mills, executive vice president for finance and administration; William Nelson, an associate professor of psychiatry and of community and family medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine; Barbara Sagraves, Dartmouth library head of preservation services; Eugene Santos, a professor of engineering at Thayer School of Engineering; Maclean Simonson ’16; Alva Taylor, an associate professor of business administration and faculty director of the Glassmeyer/McNamee Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business; and Martin Wybourne, senior vice provost for research and the Francis and Mildred Sears Professor of Physics.
