The 543 employees recognized at this year’s Employee Service Awards banquets have collectively served Dartmouth for more than 9,600 years, says Chief Human Resources Officer Scot Bemis.

At a Dec. 15 luncheon and dinner in the Class of 1953 Commons—which Bemis calls his “absolute favorite gathering of the year”—the College honored staff marking five-year milestones, beginning with a lunch celebration for the 179 and 168 employees who have served for 10 and 15 years, respectively.

Dinner celebrated those with 20 years of service and up. The evening included special recognition for Dartmouth’s longest-serving employee, Ellie Smith, assistant to the vice president of alumni relations. Smith has worked at the College since 1966, serving nine vice presidents.

“We all know to whom we need to go when we have a question that we can’t imagine how to answer,” Martha Beattie ’76, vice president for alumni relations, said of Smith in the event program. The hornbeam birch tree on the west side of Blunt Alumni Center has been dedicated in Smith’s honor.

The evening was also an opportunity to recognize the recipient of Dartmouth’s highest staff honor, the annual Sheila Culbert Distinguished Employee Award. This year’s honoree is Kim Wind, the program administrator for the Environmental Studies Program.

Wind, who has worked at Dartmouth for 11 years, was nominated unanimously by the Environmental Studies Program faculty. “Getting the faculty to be unanimous about anything is not only rare, it’s darn near impossible,” President Phil Hanlon ’77 told the gathering. “So for Kim to receive such a glowing endorsement from her colleagues is a testament to just how much she contributes to the success of the Environmental Studies Program and is universally appreciated by the entire environmental studies community.”

At both the luncheon and dinner, President Hanlon recognized the daily efforts of employees to advance the College’s mission, and noted some extraordinary achievements in the past year, including the work to restore the grounds around the newly renovated Baker Tower in time for homecoming; the continuation of museum programing at Hood Downtown while the Hood Museum of Art is closed for renovation; and the across-campus response to this fall’s fire in Morton Hall, which displaced dozens of students.

“No matter how talented a university’s students are, no matter how many rock-star faculty there are in a university, a university can only be made or broken by the strength and the quality of the staff. And it’s your heavy lifting that so often makes the ambitions of our community attainable,” Hanlon said.
