JACOB P. TAPPER ’91, as an award-winning journalist, accomplished cartoonist, and best-selling author, you bring a keen mind, a deft hand, and a critical eye to reporting the day’s political and world news.

From the time you were a student at Dartmouth, you’ve skillfully combined your penchant for illustration with your passion for history and current events to shed light on the world around you.

You cut your teeth as a journalist at the Washington City Paper, honed your craft online, and broke into broadcast journalism—first at ABC News and then at CNN. There, you have distinguished yourself as an astute, hard-hitting, truth-seeking reporter, with millions of viewers tuning in to The Lead with Jake Tapper and State of the Union each week for your incisive, objective reporting.

Your persistent hardline questioning of top newsmakers, regardless of political persuasion, has become a Tapper trademark. With the tenacity of a bulldog, you’ve mastered the art of the follow-up question with a fearless determination to extract the truth.

That same doggedness has permeated your work as moderator of our nation’s primary and presidential debates, and led to your thoroughly researched and heart-wrenching account of one of America’s deadliest battles in the War in Afghanistan in the critically acclaimed best-selling book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor.

For your devotion to truth and accuracy in reporting, for your dedication to upholding the highest journalistic standards in your work, and for your commitment to creating a more educated and informed citizenry, Dartmouth is delighted to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
