President Philip J. Hanlon ’77 underwent elective hip-replacement surgery today. The surgery comes almost a year after he had his other hip replaced.

President Hanlon made a quick and full recovery following his first hip replacement and looks forward to a similar recuperation. An active sports enthusiast and outdoorsman, the president says the surgeries are to remedy old athletic injuries.

Provost Joseph Helble is serving as acting president until Hanlon is able to resume work via email.

“I appreciate Joe’s willingness to serve in this capacity,” says Hanlon. “I know Dartmouth will be in good hands while I recuperate.”

He says he expects to return to work at first from the President’s House, and then spending time in his Parkhurst office as his recuperation allows.
