Shooting Near Dartmouth Campus Results in Order to Shelter in Place

Hanover police have arrested a Lebanon, N.H. man and charged him with second-degree assault, a felony, in connection with last night’s shooting near campus.

In a press release issued at 3 p.m. today, police say that Gage Young, 22, was arrested just before 3 p.m. They allege that Gage was traveling through Hanover last night when he “discharged a handgun toward the 19-year-old victim, striking him and causing serious bodily injury.”

The victim, who is not affiliated with Dartmouth, was outside the vehicle Gage was in near the Christian Science Reading Room on School Street, at the time of the shooting, police said in an interview.

According to the press release, the victim remains in stable condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was brought last night by Hanover ambulance.

The investigation is continuing, and police say they would like to hear from anyone who has information that may be related to the incident. They can be reached at 603-643-2222.

Nine law enforcement and public safety departments have assisted Hanover in the investigation. In addition, Hanover police have coordinated with Dartmouth’s Emergency Management Team and the College’s Safety and Security department.

Last night’s off-campus shooting was an isolated incident and there are no further safety concerns related to the matter, Hanover police reported in a press release issued just after 12 noon today.
 
Police say their ongoing investigation “has revealed credible information that this shooting incident was an isolated event. We are confident that there are no further safety concerns related from those involved in this incident,” the release says. The investigation is in its early stages, police say, and includes other law enforcement agencies.
 
Police say the 19-year-old male gunshot victim, who is not affiliated with Dartmouth, is in stable condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
 
The authorities ask that anyone who may have “heard or seen anything, including vehicles coming and going” in the area of School Street, West Wheelock Street, or Allen Street to contact Hanover police at 603-643-2222.

An adult male was shot just before 10 p.m. last night on the sidewalk outside the Christian Science Reading Room, at 1 School St., in Hanover, near the Dartmouth campus, according to Hanover police. The victim is not affiliated with Dartmouth.
 
The campus community was ordered to shelter-in-place as soon as gunshots were reported by police to Dartmouth Safety and Security officials. Students, faculty, and staff received automated shelter-in-place alerts by phone and email shortly after 10 p.m. The shelter notification was lifted in consultation with police at 12:46 a.m.
 
Report of the shooting resulted in a large police response from departments throughout the Upper Valley and from New Hampshire State Police. Police investigated several reports of gunfire-like sounds at other locations in Hanover but found nothing to indicate that shots had been fired in any other location.
 
The gunshot victim was transported by Hanover ambulance to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. His condition was unavailable early this morning.
 
Hanover police are continuing to investigate the shooting. They are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has first-hand knowledge of the situation to contact them at 603-643-2222.
