Dartmouth Photographers Share Some of Their Favorite Shots of 2018

As photographers in the Office of Communications, Eli Burakian ’00 and Robert Gill spend a lot of time capturing scenes from Dartmouth’s vibrant campus and beyond. In this gallery, they look back on some of their favorite photos from the past year.

Chefchaouen, Morocco
Sometimes it’s hard to separate a photograph from the feeling you have while taking it. Chefchaouen, Morocco, was beautiful, but what I loved about it was the Dartmouth students I got to explore with. As a photographer I’ve often traveled alone for work. Getting to share a new place with others for the first time is special. Hanna Sheikh ’19 and Dina Harith ’19 were great travel partners in Morocco, always up for anything and eager to learn. 2018 fall production of Eclipsed
Theater productions might be my favorite things to shoot on campus. I usually attend a dress rehearsal of Mainstage productions, which allows me to move around and get angles I couldn’t get during an actual performance. This fall’s production, Eclipsed, about five women during Liberia’s second civil war, was powerful and engaging. Here, Naomi Agnew ’20 and Michaela Benton ’22 perform a somber scene. Erich Osterberg and Student Julianne DeAngelo work in ice core lab
Julianne DeAngelo ’19 spent hours in a freezer processing and documenting ice cores taken from Greenland. Here she works with Erich Osterberg, an associate professor of earth sciences, who has led expeditions to Greenland to capture ice cores. (Photo by Robert Gill)

2018 winter carnival
The 2018 winter carnival was the first time I got to photograph the Nordic ski event at Oak Hill. It was great to see the event held on our own turf. I’m always impressed and inspired by our Nordic team and how hard they compete, always finishing with the tank on empty! (Photo by Robert Gill)

The tanneries in Fez, Morocco
The tanneries in Fez, Morocco, are a photographer’s dream. The place is unlike anything I’ve ever seen—or smelled. This photo shows a process that can be hard to capture in a single shot. In the foreground, cowhides are drying, becoming leather. The hides resting on the edge of the pigment baths are in the process of being dyed. Each bath is a different color, each belonging to a different person who specializes in that color alone. (Photo by Robert Gill)

Dartmouth Skiway
As a former member of the Dartmouth Alpine ski team, I always enjoy my outings to Dartmouth Skiway to shoot the team. Here, a racer launches out of the start shack on Warden’s Schuss for a slalom run. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Trip to the Sea
The Trip to the Sea is an annual journey by canoe down the Connecticut River from Hanover to the Long Island Sound, retracing the route of John Ledyard, Class of 1777. It’s such a rich tradition, and it was an honor to be there for part of the trip. This picture sums up the experience for me. Sometimes you paddle, sometimes you don’t, but the laughter and smiles are constant. (Photo by Robert Gill)

Geo Morales ’21 skateboarding
I’ve come across Geo Morales ’21 skateboarding a few times, and on this nice summer day we worked together to get some shots around campus, including this trick in front of the Fairchild Physical Sciences Center as seen through Charles O. Perry’s D2D sculpture. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

2018 homecoming football game
This was my luckiest shot of the year. I had my back turned and wasn’t paying attention to this play when it happened. The crowd started cheering, so I spun around and captured this shot with no time to spare. It was a great play and a great win. (Photo by Robert Gill)

Baker Tower seen from a bench near the top of Oak Hill
During fall foliage, I’m always looking for interesting perspectives on the campus to highlight our unique setting and sense of place. As seen from a bench near the top of Oak Hill, Baker Tower rises above the nearby trees, giving the only hint that the College lies just beyond the small ridge. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Students from the Dartmouth mountaineering club get a chance to climb Bartlett Tower
Every so often, students from the Dartmouth mountaineering club get a chance to climb Bartlett Tower. I had a great day shooting the climbers from the ground, the tower, and the air (using a drone). I particularly liked this colorful shot of Matt Rube ’19 making his way up the tower as the dappled light filtered through the trees. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Womens rugby
I don’t often get to shoot sports, so it was extra fun capturing the women’s rugby team as they played against West Point in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Assocation (NIRA) Championship semifinals on Scully-Fahey Field on a cold day after a snowstorm. The team won and went on to beat Harvard later that day for the NIRA national title! (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Matt Ayers
Matt Ayers, a professor of biological sciences, may be one of the most interesting people I met in 2018, or ever. This picture shows what happens when you ask, “Matt, what is this plant?” Twenty minutes later I knew all about that species of grey willow and every other plant within a 30-foot radius. He was so into the plants he didn’t seem to notice the half-dozen mosquitoes eating his face. (Photo by Robert Gill)

A class looks at first editions of Jane Austen in the Dartmouth Library
In February, I got to tag along when Carolyn Dever, a professor of English, took her class to Rauner Special Collections Library to turn the pages of Jane Austen first editions. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Ian Raphael ’18 on the Athabasca Glacier
The Stretch: My portrait of the year goes to Ian Raphael ’18 on the Athabasca Glacier, which flows from the Columbia Ice Field in Banff and Jasper National Parks. Ian was on the glacier to continue research he started when he was on the Stretch two years ago—living proof that the Stretch turns students into scientists. (Photo by Robert Gill)

outside Rockefeller Hall
Call me a sucker for traditional campus imagery, but I love showcasing the beauty of our part of the world when the leaves start to turn. In this shot, the colors of the tree outside Rockefeller Hall are dramatic, but a closer look reveals a student leaving the building as he’s lit by a sliver of light. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)
