Sometimes it’s hard to separate a photograph from the feeling you have while taking it. Chefchaouen, Morocco, was beautiful, but what I loved about it was the Dartmouth students I got to explore with. As a photographer I’ve often traveled alone for work. Theater productions might be my favorite things to shoot on campus. I usually attend a dress rehearsal of Mainstage productions, which allows me to move around and get angles I couldn’t get during an actual performance. The tanneries in Fez, Morocco, are a photographer’s dream. The place is unlike anything I’ve ever seen—or smelled. This photo shows a process that can be hard to capture in a single shot. In the foreground, cowhides are drying, becoming leather. The hides resting on the edge of the pigment baths are in the process of being dyed. The Trip to the Sea is an annual journey by canoe down the Connecticut River from Hanover to the Long Island Sound, retracing the route of John Ledyard, Class of 1777. It’s such a rich tradition, and it was an honor to be there for part of the trip. This picture sums up the experience for me. This picture shows what happens when you ask, “Matt, what is this plant?” Twenty minutes later I knew all about that species of grey willow and every other plant within a 30-foot radius.
