Dartmouth’s 2020 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, known as the Clery report, was posted Dec. 18 on the Dartmouth Annual Security Report website.

“This year’s report amends some of the statistics previously provided for years 2018 and 2017. The changes come as a result of a proactive assessment and review of our compliance program, which was carried out during the course of this year,” writes Director of Safety and Security Keiselim Montas in a community-wide message sent out Dec. 18. It is one part of the College-wide effort to promote a safe and secure campus environment, Montas says.

“This report reflects how Dartmouth and our community are working collaboratively to prevent crime and to enhance the overall safety and security of the campus. We are committed to providing responsive services to those affected by any crime,” Montas says.

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, also called the Clery Act, is a federal law that requires colleges and universities each year to distribute to all students and employees a report containing descriptions of College policies relating to security and to alcohol and drug use. It also contains statistics on fires in residential buildings and on certain crimes that have occurred on or close to campus, safety information, and available resources for crime victims.

The deadline for posting the annual report, normally Oct. 1, was extended to Dec. 31 this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Faculty, staff, and students receive an email linking to the report; a notice is also sent to the families of current students. The document includes the federally defined campus crime statistics from the past three calendar years, as well as information about crime prevention, campus security and personal safety, fire safety, crime-reporting policies, and other important matters related to security and safety on campus.

In his email, Montas also encouraged community members to register their mobile phones with the campus-wide emergency communication system, DartAlert, and to download the Dartmouth LiveSafe app.

Emergency-contact information in Dartmouth systems should always be up to date, Montas says. Students can update information in the “missing person and emergency and family contacts” fields in BannerStudent, a web information site for students, and employees can do so by going to the employee self-service site.

Community members with questions about the report or in need of assistance should contact Montas or Grace Alden, Dartmouth’s Clery Act compliance officer.

Paper copies of the report can be obtained by contacting the Department of Safety and Security at (603) 646-4000, the Office of Human Resources (603) 646-3411, or the Title IX Office at (603) 646-0922.
