Dartmouth policies have long been scattered across different departmental sites, making it difficult at times for users to find what they’re looking for. With this in mind, the Office of the Provost, in partnership with Information Technology and Consulting and the Office of General Counsel, have created a policy portal—a website containing Dartmouth’s institution-wide policies.

The portal, launched this week, provides a single location which can be searched for policies from offices across campus, such as Human Resources, Finance, and Title IX.

The initiative, which Provost Joseph Helble calls “one page to rule them all,” has been a year in the making. It currently houses approximately 250 policies on topics ranging from academic schedules to residential life to vacation time.

“Having a clearinghouse where community members can get answers to questions about rules and policies at Dartmouth is key to developing a nimble administrative toolbox,” says Chris Cook, vice provost for strategic initiatives and resource planning, who was one of the project’s leaders.

Portal users can search for policies by office, division of primary responsibility, and by tags such as employment policies and procedures. Users can also search by keyword, which will bring up a list of policies that contain the keyword, in order of relevance.

“The next phase of the project is the implementation of a governance system or policy on policies that will guide the review and approval process for new and existing policies,” says Cook. “We have a working group of faculty and staff stakeholders drafting an institutional policy on policies that we expect to present to the board of trustees this year for review and approval.”

Working with Cook to create the portal were Peter Carini, college archivist and records manager; Jacquelin Carty, Information, Technology and Consulting service manager; Jon Chiappa, senior director of Web Services; Mitchel Davis, vice president for Information, Technology, and Consulting and chief information officer; Maureen Hennigan, senior director of service strategy and design in ITC; Tammy Hickox, associate general counsel; Sean McNamara, senior director of information security in ITC; Ben Morgan, associate director of Web Services; Nick Perry, assistant director for special projects in the provost’s office; and Kristen Rhodes, program coordinator at the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, formerly an executive administrative assistant in the provost’s office.
