“Trade Canoe: Forty Days and Forty Nights” is part of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s “Trade Canoe” series, which she began in 1992 as a critical response to quincentennial celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the so-called “New World.” Jami Powell, associate curator of Native American Art at the Hood Museum of Art, discusses the piece and the importance of Smith’s work.
“This painting can help open up dialogues in meaningful ways,” says Powell. “Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is a prolific and generous thinker. She’s one of the most important American painters working today, and we’re really fortunate to have her work within the Hood Museum’s galleries.”
The painting is currently on display at the museum through Dec.12, 2021. While the museum is currently closed to the public, 3D virtual tours are available online.
