The Summit on Juniper graduate student apartment complex on Mount Support Road in Lebanon, N.H., developed over the last two years in partnership with Dartmouth and owned and managed by Michaels Student Living of Camden, N.J., will begin offering leases this month for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Construction on the 638-bed complex is ahead of schedule, with two of the four buildings becoming available this spring, nearly five months earlier than anticipated. In the coming weeks, Dartmouth graduate and professional students will have early exclusive access to lease the 481 beds currently available for an Aug. 19, 2022, move-in date.
The complex, created to help alleviate the housing crunch in the Upper Valley, is located on 53 acres of land just south of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Students are asked to indicate their interest now and will be notified later in January when leases are available.
The new residences are fully furnished with Wi-Fi, in-unit laundry facilities, and complimentary shuttle transportation. The units are powered with electricity and have high-efficiency HVAC cooling and heating systems. Residents will have access to a workout room, mail room, central gathering spaces, study spaces, and the adjacent Boston Lot hiking trails. More information on rental rates and room layouts can be found on the property website.
Dartmouth will provide free and frequent transportation to and from the property seven days a week—running from early morning through late night—through a combination of privately run shuttles and free public transportation. On the weekends, private shuttles will make additional stops at Centerra Marketplace, in downtown Lebanon, and at the Colonial Plaza in West Lebanon, to allow connections to nearby shopping and amenities.
Because of enrollment irregularities caused by the ongoing pandemic, Dartmouth is expecting very high undergraduate student enrollment for spring term 2022. In consideration of this anomaly, Dartmouth has partnered with Michaels to allocate beds at the Summit for the 2022 spring term to upper-level undergraduate students to alleviate housing demand. Undergraduate use of the two buildings will begin in March 2022 and end in July 2022, allowing time to prepare units for August occupancy by graduate students.
Given the ongoing undergraduate enrollment surge, one building (157 beds) will be held for anticipated upper-level undergraduate use during the 2022-2023 academic year. That decision was made in the context of previous housing-demand studies which indicate that the 481 beds available for graduate students will be more than adequate to meet that need. Dartmouth graduate students and postdocs will receive priority as applicants for each of the other three buildings for each year from January through May 31. Any leases to tenants other than graduate students would have a limited lease so that those beds can be made available to Dartmouth graduate students within 24 months.
In addition to the 638 new beds offered at the Summit on Juniper, Dartmouth is evaluating the feasibility of building new undergraduate apartments north of campus near Lyme Road as part of its plan to renovate and expand student housing on and near campus.
