Dartmouth’s Presidential Search Committee has released a search statement (PDF) describing the experience, skill set, and attributes required of Dartmouth’s next president. The statement was developed by the search committee, chaired by Susan Huang ’84 and Christopher Lord ’86, with input from the Dartmouth community, gathered through a series of listening sessions, a survey on the presidential search, and direct feedback submitted to the presidential search email address.
“The input from the Dartmouth community has been invaluable in helping the committee articulate the leadership attributes of our next president and the distinctive opportunities that Dartmouth presents to potential candidates,” says Huang.
The statement describes the next president in the Wheelock Succession as an inspiring, innovative, and strategic thinker, with a bold and aspirational vision for Dartmouth that respects its traditions while leading the institution forward at a transformational moment in higher education. It sets out goals for the next president that include building the research enterprise, increasing scale and reach for global impact, and enhancing the student experience on a truly diverse and inclusive campus.
The next president will succeed Philip J. Hanlon ’77, who is stepping down in June 2023. “The search statement is really our ‘shop window,’ and it will help us attract a broad and accomplished slate of potential candidates to build on the strong foundation of academic excellence and financial strength that Dartmouth has established under Phil’s leadership. That task starts in earnest now,” says Lord.
