Graduate students at Dartmouth this week voted to unionize. The 261-33 decision came after voting on April 11 and 12.

Thirteen ballots were also set aside for a potential challenge. Including those votes, about 39% of graduate students who received notification of election cast ballots. A simple majority of the eligible votes cast was needed to form a union.

Students in the Graduate Organized Laborers at Dartmouth organization, known as GOLD-UE, voted last July to become affiliated with the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America and initiated a campaign that culminated in this week’s voting.

“We are pleased the voting and democratic process went smoothly. We look forward to working with GOLD-UE and the National Labor Relations Board on the next steps,” says Jon Kull ’88, dean of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.
