Dean Jon Kull ’88 will extend his term as dean of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies through June 2026, Provost David Kotz ’86 announced today.

Kull, a member of the Dartmouth faculty for more than two decades, has been a strong advocate for graduate education, innovation, and interdisciplinary research.

Under his leadership, the Guarini School has evolved from an office to a school with nearly 1,000 students pursuing six advanced degrees—Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Energy Transition, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Liberal Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy—while supporting approximately 250 postdoctoral scholars.

A structural biologist and the Rodgers Professor of Chemistry, Kull was appointed dean of graduate studies in 2012.

As dean, Kull has prioritized academic excellence, inclusivity, and professional development. His efforts have expanded career resources, raised the visibility of graduate education, and fostered a supportive environment for graduate students and postdocs, bolstering Guarini’s impact on graduate education and Dartmouth’s research mission.

He guided the transition from an office of graduate studies to the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies in 2016. In 2018, the school received a naming gift from former New Jersey congressman and U.S. representative to the United Nations Frank J. Guarini ’46.

“Dean Kull’s leadership has been instrumental in the success of the Guarini School,” says Kotz. “We are delighted that he will continue to guide the school.”

A distinguished scientist, Kull has made significant contributions to structural biology and biophysics. Reflecting on his extended term, he says, “I am honored to continue serving the Guarini School and its extraordinary community of students, postdocs, faculty, and staff. Graduate education and postdoctoral training are core components of Dartmouth’s mission, and I look forward to building on our collective successes in the coming year.”

Kotz says Dartmouth looks forward to Kull’s continued leadership as Guarini strengthens its role in advancing the institution’s research mission.
