Yang Yi: A Celebration of Classical Chinese Poetry and Music
Yang Yi, Chinese educator and musician, will play traditional Chinese instruments and perform works by some of China’s greatest classical poets.
Yang Yi is a renowned Chinese musician and educator. In the 1990s, he emerged as a pioneer of contemporary folk music in China and was hailed as “China’s Bob Dylan.” Over the past two decades, he and his team have developed an innovative educational approach that brings together traditional poetry chanting, calligraphy, painting, and classical Chinese music. A number of their students have gone on to become accomplished artists of a younger generation.
In this performance at Dartmouth, Yang will play traditional Chinese instruments and perform works by some of China’s greatest classical poets—including Tao Qian and Su Shi—as well as ancient yuefu (Music Bureau) ballads through traditional chanting in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakka.
The event is free and open to the public. English translations of the poems will be provided.
