Tara Kaufmann, MD, MSCE, is Assistant Professor in the Section of Medical Oncology at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, and Faculty Director of Quality and Safety for the Dartmouth Cancer Center. She holds an affiliate faculty appointment at The Dartmouth Institute. She is a board-certified medical oncologist and palliative medicine physician who specializes in treating patients with breast cancer. Dr. Kaufmann’s research focuses on developing and implementing supportive care interventions to relieve distress and suffering for patients and families during cancer treatment. She studies how to use electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) to improve the identification and timely referral of patients with advanced cancers to specialty palliative care—promoting equitable access and better symptom management.

Dr. Kaufmann earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed a residency in internal medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill followed by fellowships in palliative medicine at Duke University and medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology with a focus on patient-centered outcomes research during oncology fellowship. Dr. Kaufmann was an Innovation Faculty member with the Penn Center for Cancer Care Innovation (PC3I) and Instructor in the Department of Medical Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania from 2019-2020, before joining Dell Medical as an Assistant Professor in 2020. She joined Dartmouth Health as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine in 2025.
