Winners of the $300 House Open Design Challenge gathered at Tuck School of Business last month to finalize two designs—one for an urban environment, the other for rural areas.
Now, the designs will become a reality in Haiti, with prototypes scheduled for construction over the coming months. Ultimately, Govindarajan hopes to build two villages full of $300 houses.
Govindarajan, the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business, hopes the project can end a cycle of poverty he sees stemming from inadequate housing.
“Because they are poor, they have a bad house ... they have no sanitation ... they fall sick ... they don’t go to work ... they don’t have money and they are condemned to a bad house,” he says.
