Twenty-three scholars—from a variety of disciplines that include biology, Native American studies, and sociology—have joined the ranks of Dartmouth’s Arts & Sciences faculty this academic year. In this weeklong series, Dartmouth Now takes a closer look at some of these scholars, their research, and what brought them to Dartmouth.

“The Dartmouth community welcomes this extraordinary collection of professors to campus,” says Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences Michael Mastanduno.

“They are both world-class teachers and scholars in their respective disciplines; their passion and expertise will greatly benefit and advance the Dartmouth community.”

In addition to the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Dartmouth’s professional schools have welcomed new tenured and tenure-track faculty.

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth has appointed Christopher I. Amos, Giovanni Bosco, Chao Cheng, Robert A. Cramer, Jr., Amarendra K. Das, Casey S. Greene, Adv. ’10, Todd W. Miller, David W. Mullins, Richard Simons, Elizabeth Teisberg, and Scott Williams to the faculty.

The Tuck School of Business has welcomed scholars Yaniv Dover, Teresa Fort, Giovanni Gavetti, Steven Kahl ’91, and Margaret Pierson.

Thayer School of Engineering has appointed Brenden Epps, an assistant professor of engineering.

New faculty members say they had positive first impressions.

“I am very impressed by the vibrant scholarly environment of Dartmouth,” says Olga Zhaxybayeva, assistant professor of biological sciences. “I wish I had time to go to all the interesting seminars and symposia that happen here daily.”

Emily Walton, assistant professor of sociology, enjoys working with her students. “The students here are incredible—engaged, confident, and well prepared,” says Walton. “I love preparing for class and thinking about all the things the students will find interesting, as well as engaging in discussion with students who ask incredible questions and challenge us all to be better.”

Sara Muñoz, assistant professor of Spanish, says she feels comfortable at Dartmouth. “Every day I am astonished by how nice and collaborative people are here. Everybody is willing to help, to offer a piece of advice, and they make you feel at home,” she says. “This, combined with the highly intellectual atmosphere that surrounds Dartmouth, makes it an outstanding and privileged place to be.”
