Geisel, Thayer Professors Are Named NAI Fellows

The Geisel School of Medicine’s Aaron Kaplan and Thayer School of Engineering’s Robert Dean have been named 2015 fellows of the National Academy of Inventors.

Election to NAI fellow status is a professional distinction accorded to academics who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating inventions that have had a tangible impact on the quality of life, the economic development, and the welfare of society.

Aaron Kaplan, a professor of medicine and of community and family medicine at Geisel and an interventional cardiologist at the Heart & Vascular Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, has been named a 2015 fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Kaplan, who joined the Dartmouth faculty in 2002, serves as director of clinical research in cardiovascular medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. In addition to his clinical responsibilities in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, he supervises fellows and lectures regularly at the Tuck School of Business.

Kaplan is an active medical device entrepreneur who has authored more than 45 U.S. patents. He has been on the founding team of a number of venture-backed medical device companies, including Tryton Medical, LocalMed and Perclose (acquired by Abbott). In addition, he has served as consultant for many medical device companies and was an entrepreneur-in-residence at Three Arch Partners. Currently, he focuses his device development efforts on Tryton Medical, Inc., a company he founded to develop a side branch specific stent.

Robert Dean Jr., an adjuct professor emeritus of engineering at Thayer, has been named a fellow of the NAI.

In addition to being a member of the Dartmouth engineering sciences faculty since 1961, Dean currently serves as president of Synergy Innovations Inc, where he is developing processes and products.

He holds 28 U.S. patents, with about five patents pending, and numerous foreign patents. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dean received one of the first “Tibbett's Pioneer Awards” for his contributions to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program as well as the ASME Gold Medal for his technical accomplishments, inspiration of fellow engineers and many contributions to the engineering profession. In 1998, the New Hampshire High Technology Council awarded Dean the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He is the co-founder of 10 companies.

Dean joins Dartmouth engineering professors Eric Fossum, Tillman Gerngross, Elsa Garmire, and Axel Scherer as fellows of NAI.
