In its first-ever virtual degree celebration, held June 14, Dartmouth will award more than 1,900 degrees to the Class of 2020. Due to COVID-19, graduates are unable to celebrate on the Green this year, but a special on-campus commencement event for members of the Class of 2020 is being planned for June 2021.

Here’s a look at the celebration, by the numbers.

Degrees Awarded

• Arts and Sciences, undergraduate: 1,051 Bachelor of Arts
• Frank J. Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies awarded Master of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
• Geisel School of Medicine awarded Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees.
• Thayer School of Engineering awarded Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering Management degrees.
• Tuck School of Business awarded Master of Business Administration degrees.
• Total degrees awarded: 1,914

Where the Graduates Come From

Members of the undergraduate Class of 2020 come from 47 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The most-represented states are New York, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Hampshire.

International students come from 32 countries; the most-represented are Canada, the United Kingdom, and the People’s Republic of China.

Most Popular Majors

Economics, government, engineering sciences, computer science, and psychology are the most popular majors for the Class of 2020.

Valedictorians and Salutatorians

Emma Esterman ’20, Brandon Nye ’20, Scott Okuno ’20, Joshua Perlmutter ’20, Armin Tavakkoli ’20, Sebastian Wurzrainer ’20 are this year’s valedictorians. Esterman was selected by the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences to deliver the valedictory to the College at the degree celebration.

The salutatorians are Mary Versa Clemens-Sewall ’20, Phoebe Cunningham ’20, Long Hoang Do ’20, Victoria Nedder ’20, Zijie Wang ’20, and Samuel Wilson ’20.

Phi Beta Kappa

The Alpha of New Hampshire Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Dartmouth will induct 144 undergraduates as new members in ceremonies held online June 13.

The chapter also will honor the 21 undergraduates inducted in October.
