Dartmouth’s Olympic Tradition Continues

In less than two weeks, Sochi’s Olympic venues will be filled with color—reds, blues, and yellows—representing the more than 90 countries competing at the Games. There will also be a lot of green at the 2014 Winter Games—Big Green, that is.

Twelve athletes with ties to Dartmouth—representing four different countries and competing in five different sports—will be among the world’s elite competitors vying for gold at the XXII Olympic Games that begin on February 6.

Representing the United States will be: David Chodounsky ’08, Nolan Kasper ’14, and Andrew Weibrecht ’09 (alpine skiing); Hannah Dreissigacker ’09, Thayer ’10, Susan Dunklee ’08, and Sara Studebaker ’07 (biathlon); Sophie Caldwell ’12 and Ida Sargent ’11 (cross-country skiing); and Hannah Kearney ’15 (freestyle skiing).

Kearney is the reigning gold medalist in freestyle moguls skiing, while Weibrecht looks to add to the bronze medal that he won in the men’s Super G at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Kasper and Studebaker were also members of Team USA at the 2010 Games. Chodounsky, Caldwell, Dunklee, Dreissigacker, and Sargent are making their Olympic debut.

Gillian Apps ’06 will be competing in her third Olympics as a member of Canada’s women’s ice hockey team. Apps helped guide Canada to gold medals in both the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games.

Cross-country skier Tucker Murphy ’04 will once again represent Bermuda at this year’s Games. In 2010, he carried the Bermuda flag during the opening ceremonies in Vancouver.

Trace Cummings Smith ’15 is making his Olympic debut and will compete in Sochi as a member of the Estonia Alpine ski team.
